ABOUT ME … Revd Wim Vermeulen
The idea of a non-judgmental religious organisation consisting
of small caring Christian ‘communities’ serving the Lord in building Bible-based relationships with one another
and within the communities which they exist at a time when I had become disillusioned by the institutional ‘Church’
was what drew me to TACOTSA.
Born of Rhodesian farming stock I completed my school career
and military service in Rhodesia before embarking on a career in hotel management at the Wits Technicon Hotel School in 1977.
After working in managerial positions with Holiday Inn (Pietersburg & Harrismith), Southern Suns (Kimberley) and The Mount
Nelson Hotel (Cape Town) I joined the Human Resources Department of the Anglo American Corporation in Welkom in 1984. From
here I moved to the Development Bank of Southern Africa in Midrand. I returned to the Free State to own and manage a Coffee
Shop and re-joined Anglo American before studying full-time for my BA (Theology) degree at The University of the Orange Free
State in Bloemfontein.
My call to the ordained ministry came early one Monday morning
in 1990 as I sat in my office in the Development Bank in Midrand. On completion of my BA(Theology) degree I was ordained to
the diaconate in the Anglican Church in December 1997 and served my diaconate at the Cathedral of St. Andrew & St. Michael
in Bloemfontein. Ordained to the priesthood the following year I served my curacy in Bloemfontein for a further year before
relocating to Kroonstad as rector of St. George’s. With experience in both hospitality and human resources I transferred
to Ladybrand in 2005 to become Warden of St. Augustine’s Priory Conference Centre and B&B and rector of St. James’.
After I questioned the unauthorised use of Church Trust Funds
an unfortunate impasse developed between the Bishop and I. This led to my resignation from the stipendiary ministry in the
Anglican Church to buy a guest house with a friend in Cradock, Eastern Cape in January 2007.
My futile attempts to secure a post within the Anglican Church
in the Eastern Cape never dampened my passion for my calling to serve the Lord’s people and I turned to the Internet
to find a suitable alternative … and I found TACOTSA.
After an initial inquiry to Revd Daniel Brits in September 2011
and the due process I was appointed as Revd and TACOTSA Representative for the newly established TACOTSA-EC in March 2012
with an area stretching from Plettenberg Bay to Grahamstown and inland to Colesberg.
There are so many people who have been part of my journey to
this day. I have believed in God from a very early age and that belief has grown
and deepened throughout my life, encouraged and influenced by many including my family and friends.
I have had many conversations over the years in which I have
learnt and shared about the faith with a wide variety of people. Through all of these I have been helped to appreciate more
the immensity of God’s working in the world. With hindsight, maybe there
were signs of God’s calling me to ministry for some time before I finally listened, heard, trusted and became obedient
to Him.
For all who have played an important part in my journey and
who have helped, challenged and supported me, I give thanks to God.
I look forward to the new challenges offered by a ministry within
the TACOTSA-EC fold.
